The people in Calgary have always loved light beers. Amongst the many reasons, the most popular is the fact that it’s been brewed in a unique, special way so as to reduce its calories and alcohol content. Most beer drinkers have it because they adore the fact that it’s less unhealthy that most other kinds of beers.
In the past, light beers were made to contain a little alcohol component so beer drinkers could have as much as they can handle without experiencing the feeling of intoxication. This kind was designed for casual beer drinking occasions. In Calgary, people refer to this as the ‘lawnmower beer’ because of their practice of drinking a bottle or two while cleaning up the yard. Through time, Calgary breweries produced low calorie light beer versions in response to a lot of people’s request. The breakthrough production has given birth to the light beer most of us know today- low in both alcohol and calories.
At present, there are a number of ways on how to make light beer versions already. The higher temperature during the fermentation process as well as varied barley handling techniques result in a lower alcohol content. In most breweries Calgary, for instance, they utilize ingredients such as wheat and rice to make light beers. Another technique being used is the addition of special enzymes, which has the ability to breakdown dextrin- a common beer substance. Dextrins, in reality, cannot be fermented because they are still able to retain their structure despite the high temperature during the brewing process. With the addition of enzymes, the beer’s caloric content is reduced and a rich aroma is produced.

Though this beer has proved its popularity in the modern market, numerous critics still claim that this beer’s flavor often lacks the essential properties of regular beers, in general. Canadian breweries producing craft beer vary greatly in flavour and boldness. and Light beers could be very watery, especially if the water content is increased along the process, and its flavor tends to be less brassy and more subtle when compared with the conventional kinds.
Despite these negative impressions, hundreds of thousands of people still enjoy it. More than its supposed ‘healthier’ alternative image, it is still out of taste preference that beer drinkers choose this over all other kinds.
